The São Paulo Metro’s Line 5 (Lilac), together with the CPTM (Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos) Lines 1 (Blue), 2 (Green) and 9 (Emerald), forms a high-capacity network linking the Santo Amaro neighbourhood to major service and business centres such as Ibirapuera, Vila Mariana and Brooklin.
In its early days, residents and traders in the Santo Amaro area expressed concern about the possible increase in bus traffic in the area, especially because of Adolfo Pinheiro Station, which occupies an area of 30,500 square metres in the neighbourhood.
However, on 27 June 2008 the metro administration guaranteed that no further new line would be created at the site. The line was expected to contribute to an increase of up to 50% in the value of the properties and flats along Avenida Santo Amaro once the line was completed in 2009.
All the stations on the stretch between Capão Redondo and Santo Amaro are elevated, while the stations between Largo Treze and Chácara Klabin are underground. Santo Amaro station stands out, built on a suspended bridge where the line crosses the confluence of the Jurubatuba and Guarapiranga rivers, forming the Pinheiros River.
Since 2017, the line has operated with the modern CBTC control and signalling system and, since 2022, all the stations on the line have been fitted with platform screen doors, which helps to improve the safety and efficiency of metro operations.
