BILHETE ÚNICO
On this page you can discover how to travel on São Paulo’s transport system. You can find out about the types and prices of the Bilhete Único, how to use it, the requirements for getting one, the benefits of owning one, where to buy it, how to top it up, make transfers and more frequently asked questions about each of the available types of Bilhete Único.
Bilhete Único Standard – Integrated Fare
The Bilhete Único Comum card is a convenient option that allows integrated journeys between the buses of the city of São Paulo and the metro or train.
This card allows up to four journeys in total: one on the train or metro (within a period of up to two hours from the first validation on the bus) and the remaining journeys can be made on São Paulo’s extensive bus network, provided a period of three hours from the first validation is respected. To take advantage of this transfer, you must pay the corresponding transfer fee, which is currently 7.65 reais.
Beyond the advantage of transfers, the Bilhete Único travel card offers extra convenience. You can use the credit on this card to enter CPTM (Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos, the commuter rail operator) and São Paulo Metro stations, where validators have been installed for your convenience. This means you can use your credit on buses as well as on the train and metro system, making it even easier to get around the city.
The Bilhete Único Comum offers the following transfer options:
1st journey starting by train or metro with the Bilhete Único Comum
The first train or metro journey begins with an automatic charge of R$ 4,40 on the Bilhete Único travel card when you pass through the ticket gate on the metro or the CPTM (Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos) commuter rail. However, it is worth noting that the difference of R$ 3,25 is charged by the validator on the first bus you use within three hours of the first validation.
This means that, when you validate your card on the first bus, the remaining R$ 3,25 will be automatically deducted to complete the total cost of the journey, and you can make up to two additional journeys on São Paulo’s urban bus network at no extra cost within the three hours between the first and last validation of the ticket.
This is a convenient way to encourage transfers and allow passengers to enjoy several journeys across different modes of transport for a limited period of time, paying a single fare.
1st journey starting by bus with the Bilhete Único Comum
When you tap the validator on the bus, R$ 4,40 is automatically debited from your Bilhete Único card. This payment lets you make up to two additional bus trips within three hours of the first validation on the bus, at no extra cost.
The difference of R$ 3,25, which corresponds to the full cost of the train or metro journey, is charged at the Metro or CPTM ticket gate when you pass through. This second payment is made within two hours of the first validation on the bus.
It is an efficient way to make it easier to combine the different modes of public transport in São Paulo and to give passengers the convenience of making several journeys while paying a single fare.
Bilhete Único Transport Voucher – Integrated Fare
The Bilhete Único Vale-Transporte card offers the possibility of transferring between São Paulo’s buses and the metro or train. With this card, the user can make two journeys on public transport:
- Train or metro journey: the user can make a train or metro journey within two hours of the first validation on a bus.
- City bus journey: In addition to the train or metro journey, this card allows a second journey on São Paulo’s city bus network. This second journey must be made within three hours of the first validation on the bus.
To access this transfer fare, you must pay an additional charge of 9.24 reais. This card option is especially useful for those who need to make combined journeys using both the metro/train and city buses. It allows greater flexibility and savings by making two journeys possible for one additional cost.
The Bilhete Único Vale-Transporte offers the following transfer options:
1st journey starting by train or metro
The Bilhete Único Vale-Transporte card is topped up with R$ 4,83 at the Metro or CPTM ticket gate on the first validation. The remaining difference of R$ 4,41 is then charged at the bus validator. With this top-up, the user gets the right to make two journeys on public transport, one on the train or metro and another on São Paulo’s urban bus network.
Both journeys must be made within the set time limits: up to two hours from the first validation on the bus for the train or metro journey, and within the three-hour period from the first validation on the bus for the city bus journey. This card makes it easier to transfer between the city’s different public transport modes.
1st journey starting by bus
The same process as above. R$ 4,83 is debited from the card when you tap the validator on the bus. The difference of R$ 4,41 is debited at the ticket gate of the Metro or CPTM.
EARLY-BIRD FARE
The Early Bird fare is an option that lowers the cost of the fare for those who use the metro and the train early in the morning. There are two types of Early Bird fare available:
Madrugador Vale-Transporte: This fare costs R$ 4,28.
Madrugador Comum: The Madrugador Comum (early-bird) fare costs 3.85 reais.
These fares are advantageous for users who hold the Bilhete Único travel card in the Common and Transport Voucher categories and use the public transport systems during the following times:
On the Metro, the Early Bird (Madrugador) fare applies Monday to Friday, from 4h to 6h15.
On the commuter train, the Early Bird (Madrugador) fare applies Monday to Friday, from 4h to 5h35.
These reduced fares are a way to encourage the use of public transport in the early hours of the day and give users the opportunity to save on their morning journey.
You can see the metro timetable by clicking the button below:
It is important to note that the Early-Bird (Madrugador) fare reduction does not apply to holders of the Cartão Fidelidade, Cartão Lazer, Cartão Estudante and Cartão Professor.
In addition, users of the Marugador fare have the option to transfer to São Paulo’s city buses. For users of the standard Bilhete Único, this transfer costs R$ 6,86, while for Vale-Transporte users the cost of the transfer is R$ 8,45.
This option allows travellers to use several modes of transport within a specific period at a reduced cost, making it easier to get around the city.
